FEEL FREE TO SCROLL AND JUST LOOK AT THE IMAGES IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE READING LIKE ME!
I’m no film critic nor do I have the sharp senses of an English major (I am always fascinated how people can write essay length theories and predictions on the smallest foreshadowing and I eat that stuff up), there will be none of that here, I am a simple film/TV series watcher that has a few ideas floating around I want to share in comic format.
If anyone wants a proper review, any google search will come up with a nice summary and insightful and witty thoughts. But it you want mindless, silly reactions (or if don’t like reading long text, just scroll and look at the images!) well look no further!
And since this is a POST-series reaction/review/recap. There will be SPOILERS ahead.
!! SPOILERS AHEAD !!
1 Monologues
There are a lot of insightful and reflective stuff a lot of the characters say but I cannot for the life of me follow them for long. 1 I do have ADHD (I try real hard but sometimes focusing is just not possible the longer the dialogue is), and 2 I am lucky enough not to personally relate to a lot of the things they say (from questioning their religion and Islamphobia) I appreciate that it provides a voice for for the people who can relate to it and also for the writer to convey their message. But for me, a casual no-brain TV watcher, I found those sections too dragged out.
2 The word which shall not be named
My first reaction to something that drains my blood, murders an island full of cats… probably not an angel…right?
No shade to Monsignor Pruitt, I actually loved this character. I liked how he was not a ‘priest is sinister/is a villain’, I mean he kind of is the villain here but he is driven a lot by his love for the people of the island but also very relatable, desiring a second-chance for him and his family,
Yes, I know there is genre blindness, but I just wanted to jump up and scream VAMPIRE sometimes.
3 Someone needs to be slapped
I don’t condone violence, but for a fictional character like Bev, man I was kind waiting for someone to slap her, I mean Erin got one and she far from being a [redacted].
We were treated to Annie Flynn calling her “not a good person”, because when the sweetest lady in the town calls you down you must be a major butthole. She got burned harder than when she literally goes up into flames.
I suppose we’ll have to settle for Bev digging herself into the sand before burning into a fiery crisp.
4 AA Success
Monsignor Pruitt ran a pretty successful AA meeting as the only two members of the group will never drink another drop of alcohol again in their life. It could because of the AA meeting, or it could be getting your blood sucked out of your brains and or turning into a vampire before going up into flames in broad daylight that did it for Joe and Riley… but who keeps track eh?
5 Everyone pretty much died but I still want to imagine my happy lesbians thank you~
Thankfully our two teenage sweethearts Leeza and Warren survived. I still like to imagine Sarah managed to get off the island like she and her partner discussed at the Easter picnic in Episode 2 though.
On different perspectives
I just wanted to include some musings from other perspectives from other blogs. One of my favourites was from someone who is Catholic wrote this review discussing religion, groupthink and more.
I found it fascinating because Midnight Mass I imagine can feel quite personal for those who are Catholic and may feel the show misrepresents it.
I cannot comment on the matter as I do not have personal experience. I did manage to find a post from a perspective from a priest (they do sympathize with Pruitt and notes Bev really is the villain here – agreed).
I can however comment on someone who is not religious/Catholic viewing the show and how I felt about Catholicism while watching.
Anti-Catholic?
I was not turned off by Catholicism or Christianity. I don’t know if they fully represented the religion well (of course it will be biased and based on writer’s own experiences) – I do not view the religion negatively. The show is a thought provoking piece about religion and what it means for everyone.
There are wonderful loving people who are Catholic like Annie Flynn.
There’s Bev who represent people who twist the words of faith to match their needs and use them divide and hurt others.
They’re just people. And I like how Annie described it, in her faith, God loves them all. There may be people like Bev who choose to be a massive butthole, but if they were to truly understand compassion and love that God has for everyone, that sounds like a lovely world to be in.
Muslim perspective
I really liked Sharif and Ali’s characters but since I can’t really speak once again from personal experience; I’ll be including thoughts from people who are Muslim that enjoyed or did not enjoy certain aspects of the characters.
There was a thread on Reddit discussing “…appreciation for Midnight Mass as a Muslim”
There were also a few comments who maybe did not like how their characters were tied to 9/11.
And just a few more interesting thoughts from those who are
“Recovering Catholics”
Final Thoughts
Wow, I can’t believe I started my first review post based on religion… next I have to do a show with a lot of political perspectives (/s?).
While slow at times I was always intrigued to know what happens next. I usually like TV series that has a story to tell and wraps it up in a timely manner, and this is a singular season with 7 episodes. I enjoyed the exploration of religion and the characters’ struggles in faith. Monsignor Pruitt was a very memorable character and I’m glad he wasn’t a stereotypically evil priest. He did so wrong but we could understand why he did what he did.
Anyways my simple mind enjoyed the story/theme, but I would have preferred less speeches because my TikTok brain can’t handle anything longer than 10 seconds.
